Basildon Council works with homelessness charity, St Mungo’s, to provide an outreach service to people sleeping rough in the local community. Outreach workers speak with people on the streets to find out about their situation, their health and other issues, and help them to move off the streets for good.
There has been an increase in people sleeping rough in Basildon Town Centre and the issue is reflected in towns and cities across the country. Official snapshot figures show that 4,134 people were sleeping rough across England in autumn 2016, a 134% increase since 2010.
Basildon Council has gained support from Basildon Town Centre Management (BTCM) and Eastgate Shopping Centre to run the ‘Change the way you give’ campaign from Monday 2 October to Friday 1 December.
This campaign aims to encourage the community to make a real difference to the lives of people sleeping rough by donating to support this outreach service and help even more people.
If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough and want to connect them to local services, you can do this via the national referral service www.streetlink.org.uk.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. They’ll send your money directly to the charity (saving the charity time and money too!).
