Reshaping Eastgate to help reinvigorate Basildon
The announcement this week about the Topshop and Miss Selfridge store closures marks a sad day for our high streets and of course for all those losing their jobs as a result. These closures, coupled with the Debenham’s announcement last week, have highlighted the challenges the retail sector is facing, intensifying the need for the repurposing of space within our town centres. Basildon town centre is no exception, and must grow and evolve to ensure its survival, and the introduction of different uses for the space left by retail closures is a key part of this.
Graeme Jones, Asset Manager at Sovereign Centros said: “Our application for the Eastgate Quarter will address this, creating a vibrant mixed-use destination for the people of Basildon. Introducing homes, businesses and activities for all, set in welcoming and green public spaces, will reshape the shopping centre and bring in new experiences to reinvigorate the town. We understand that the shopping centre and retail offering are important to the town, and our regeneration plans seek to evolve the offer to provide a rightsized high quality shopping destination for the people of Basildon.
“We continue to work with retailers and businesses to support them during this period, and will work closely with those businesses affected by the recent announcements”.
